Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program at MedStar NRH

2018-19 students

Welcome from the Program Director

Hi everyone!  Thank you so much for your interest in our program.  I am personally so proud of this program, its opportunities, and the people you can work with here.  Starting with our incredible preliminary medicine intern year at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, you will receive incredible medicine training and also feel integrated into your PM&R residency from day one!  We have so many unique opportunities in our program that we will highlight to you.  We have a big focus on physician wellness as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion.  There are so many opportunities throughout the MedStar system you can take advantage of and you can read more at: and see more at:

My two main goals as a program director are to:

  1. Train skilled, knowledgeable, compassionate well-rounded physiatrists: It’s hard to think of a better place to become a physiatrist than here in the nation’s capital.  We are the main game in town as it pertains to rehabilitation.  Here you will see an abundance of “bread-and-butter” rehabilitation diagnoses in addition to the rare diagnoses that you may not see everywhere.  With our diverse patient population, you should be ready for anything after graduation.  In addition, with our wide variety of clinical sites you will graduate with a broad vantage point on the spectrum of health care.
  2. Train the “happy physiatrist”: With all we hear about physician burnout I truly hope you have a long, happy career as a physiatrist.  I believe that pursuing your passions can help get you there.  That’s why our program tries to focus on those passions.  Whether it’s sports coverage, research, social media, ultrasound, global health, education or anything else – we want to help you deep dive into those passions to set you up for a rewarding career that makes it easy to wake up and go to work every day!
