DR. ANNA GREENWALD AWARDED GEORGETOWN'S PILOT RESEARCH PROJECT GRANT

Dr. Anna Greenwald, a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and a member of the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery, received the Pilot Research Project grant from the Georgetown University Medical Center for her study titled, Recovery after Right Brain Stroke. Dr. Greenwald’s study aims to gain more knowledge about difficulties people with stroke face in everyday life. The project investigates the impact of emotion recognition impairments on social support and long-term outcomes after stroke. Especially right-hemisphere strokes can interfere with a person’s ability to read and express emotions. Because these abilities are crucial for maintaining and forging social ties, we suspect that their impairment may result in lower social support for survivors of right-hemisphere strokes. This, in turn, could make it harder for them to recover and regain functional independence. The results of the study will show whether it would be beneficial to include emotion recognition and expression as an additional focus during stroke rehabilitation.
